Chin implant surgery is a popular cosmetic surgery procedure and will be of benefit to you if you have a weak or receding chin. The actual chin implant is made from a non toxic materials such as ePTFE which is biocompatible and does not usually react adversely in the human anatomy. ePTFE is a porous material so after the plactic surgeon has attached the chin implant to the chin, the implant will be held even more securely to the chine bone as soft tissue and bone growing through and into the chin implant.

Chin Implant Surgery

The chin implant is usually inserted by the plastic surgeon, whilst you are under general anaesthetic, although sometimes a local anaesthetic is used.. The plastic surgeon will make an incision inside the mouth or under the chin and silicon implant is inserted, and attached onto the chin. Chin implant surgery usually takes the plastic surgeon 2 hours to complete.

After chin implant surgery you usually will need to stay overnight in the cosmetic surgery clinic. The chin will be swollen and distorted for up to 2 weeks after surgery, and the chin will take a further 2 months to 3 months to completely heal. The plastic surgeon will also advise you to rinse your mouth with salt water regularly, to avoid infection, if the chin implant surgery was from inside the mouth. If the plastic surgeon inserted the chin implant from under the chin from the outside, there will be a very small scar, which will fade over time.

As with all cosmetic surgery procedures there is some slight chance of complications, some risks specific to chin implant surgery are :

Infection if the chin implant is inserted from inside the mouth, antibiotics after surgery and your mouth hygiene routine, should prevent this

The chin implant moving out of position, which will result in further chin surgery to correct

The chin implant being rejected by the body, which will result in the need to remove the chin implant.
